A head start on “Hello!”

Briefly …

Travel apps are changing how solo travellers meet their group companions, share information and prepare for a journey before departure.

Before travelling to Sicily, Janet had already met one of her fellow travellers. Bert, from Scotland, was booked on the same Just You tour, and the pair connected through Kindred, an online community developed by the solo travel operator. Others, including Christine and Kate, entered her life in the more traditional way: they met in person on the flight. Over the following week, those introductions developed into friendships.

For Janet, who has travelled with Just You for 16 years, the difference is the opportunity to make connections before leaving home. “Kindred allows me to connect with people before I travel,” she says. “Either way, I found my friendships grew from there over the course of the week.”

Janet’s experience illustrates a development in organised group travel. Technology is extending the journey beyond its departure and return dates, giving travellers opportunities to meet, exchange information and maintain relationships before, during and after their holidays. For solo travellers joining a group of unfamiliar people, these platforms introduce another way to approach the first meeting.

Just You’s Kindred and the Intrepid Travel app are two examples of operators bringing communication between travelling companions into their digital services, although they approach the task differently. Kindred operates as a community in its own right. Accessible through a website and mobile app, it is free to join and open to previous guests, people with upcoming bookings and those considering their first solo holiday. Members exchange travel advice, share experiences and discuss destinations. Travellers booked on a particular departure can also join a dedicated trip chat, allowing them to introduce themselves and communicate before meeting in person. A Just You holiday director joins each departure’s conversation shortly before the tour begins, providing another channel for practical questions and preparation.

For Janet, the most significant benefit extends beyond preparing for a particular holiday. “As a seasoned solo traveller with Just You, the Kindred app makes a difference to the overall holiday experience in the sense that it allows me to share reviews, support other members of the community who need reassurance and answer any questions they may have.”

She describes conversation as the platform’s greatest contribution and says there have been only a few days since its launch when she hasn’t used it. Her enthusiasm also comes from experience with an earlier generation of online travel communities. She remains friends with people from a 2014 Just You trip to Chicago and New Orleans, connections originally established through the operator’s previous platform.

The idea of meeting fellow travellers online is therefore not entirely new. What has developed is the integration of these conversations into services designed specifically around the travel experience. Intrepid Travel has approached that integration through its own mobile app. Available for Apple and Android devices, the app combines booking management, itineraries, essential travel information and communication with trip leaders. Travellers can connect with fellow group members before departure, while information and updates from local leaders continue to be delivered through the app during the journey.

The emphasis is more closely tied to the practical management of an individual trip. It brings together information that might otherwise be distributed across booking documents, emails and separate conversations, while providing a space for travelling companions to communicate. Kindred, by comparison, functions as a continuing community, with conversations extending across different departures and between holidays.

For solo travellers, the distinction is useful. One approach places communication within the practical arrangements of a booked journey; the other provides an ongoing environment in which travellers can exchange experiences, seek advice and establish connections independently of a particular departure. Neither approach removes the personal choices involved in meeting unfamiliar people.

Janet values knowing someone before a journey begins, describing the familiarity of even one fellow traveller as a comfort. Yet she also enjoys the unexpected encounters that remain part of group travel. On a holiday in Malta, she recognised another passenger but couldn’t immediately place her. They eventually realised they had travelled together in Japan on an earlier trip. “So, I think the app can enhance the holiday experience, but you still have the spontaneity there,” she says.

That balance is worth considering. Digital introductions can make the first day of a tour more familiar, but they cannot determine how relationships will develop once people begin travelling together. Privacy is another consideration, particularly when communicating with people who are initially strangers. These platforms create opportunities to connect, but the amount of personal information shared remains a matter of individual choice.

What these platforms offer is an additional point of contact, extending the opportunities for communication beyond the traditional meeting place and departure time. For Janet, the appeal is straightforward. She can connect before a holiday, develop friendships during it and continue sharing experiences afterwards. For others, the first introduction will still happen at the airport, in a hotel lobby or over dinner on the opening evening. The difference is that travellers now have another choice about when the conversation begins.
