Book review: ‘The Conscious Traveller Hawai’i’ by Kathleen Wong
Published by Hardie Grant Explore. Review by Emily Clarke
There are travel guides that tell us where to go, where to stay, and what to see. Occasionally, there are others that inspire us to contemplate the mystery of why we travel at all. Kathleen Wong’s ‘The Conscious Traveller Hawai‘i’ belongs to this second, rarer tradition. Expansive in scope and attentive in its detail, it explores the islands not simply as destinations, but as environments shaped by history, stewardship and contemporary community life.
From its opening pages, Wong – who was born on the mainland but raised on O‘ahu – shifts the narrative away from predictable, infinitely photographable itineraries towards a more attentive way of moving through place. This is not a conventional checklist-driven guide. Instead, it presents travel as an opportunity to engage with the many little-known wonders of Hawai‘i’s landscapes, histories, communities and experiences more thoughtfully.

A defining feature of the book is its attention to Indigenous perspectives. Wong foregrounds the historical depth of Hawai‘i while acknowledging the continuing relevance of stewardship traditions that guide environmental and cultural practice today. She introduces the principle of mālama ‘āina (caring for the land), as a reminder that visitors are entering a living cultural environment. Practical suggestions, from exploring volcanic terrain to supporting local artisans and navigating inter-island journeys, are framed as opportunities for connection rather than consumption.
Strong visual and typographic design and an accessible structure make the 224 pages inviting to browse, while its underlying message remains clear – meaningful travel asks for our attention, humility and time. For solo travellers, the book works best as not only a definitive guide, but also a gentle provocation. It encourages us to look again at familiar imagery, move with greater awareness, and notice how our choices shape the places we visit. In doing so, it reflects a wider shift in travel culture towards journeys that feel reciprocal, grounded and genuinely informed.
