Kay Manuel
Kay is Australia’s multi-award-winning, reigning queen of adult entertainment and one of the most recognised and talked-about names in the industry today. “I started in the industry the day I turned 18,” Kay tells The Solo Traveller, “… and from that very moment, I made a promise to myself – I would work harder than anyone else, I would never apologise for my ambition, and I would build an empire from the ground up. Fast forward six years, and I’ve kept that promise.”
Where’s home, Kay?
Gold Coast, Australia.
What can you share with us about the first time you travelled solo?
The first time I travelled solo was definitely unforgettable – it started with a wild twist. On my way to the United States, I had a layover in Manila, and somehow, I ended up being held up by airport security over a mix-up with my luggage. They thought something suspicious was packed inside, and I had to sit through hours of questioning while trying to stay calm in a country I’d never been to before. Eventually, everything got cleared up – it was just a portable charger setting off alarms, but at the time I was convinced I’d miss my entire trip!
Luckily, I made it to the US, and that’s where the real adventure began. I spent the next few months travelling by bus through 23 different states, and it completely changed my life. What amazed me most was how each state felt like a whole new country. Different laws, different landscapes, and even totally different accents. One day I’d be in the desert heat of Arizona, and the next I’d be surrounded by lush forests in Oregon. People in New York spoke fast and sharp, while those in the South had the warmest drawls and hospitality. It opened my eyes to how incredibly diverse one country can be, and it taught me so much – not just about the world, but about myself. That trip sparked my love for solo travel, and I’ve never looked back.
What kind of research did you do before your first trip?
I actually didn’t do any research at all and that was completely intentional. I’ve always been a spontaneous, free-spirited person, and for me, part of the magic of travel is discovering things as they come. I love the thrill of arriving somewhere new without a rigid plan, allowing myself to get lost in the streets, stumble upon hidden gems, and connect with locals in a natural, unscripted way. While some people feel more comfortable planning every detail in advance, I’ve found that going with the flow leads to the most memorable and authentic experiences. It’s taught me to trust my instincts, adapt quickly, and embrace the unknown with open arms. That kind of freedom is what makes solo travel so special to me.
What do you love the most about travelling solo?
What I love most about travelling solo is the complete freedom it gives me. Waking up and doing exactly what I want, exploring new places on my own terms, and fully diving into each experience without needing to compromise. It’s a chance for self-reflection, growth, and meeting people from all walks of life. Solo travel allows me to recharge, find inspiration, and reconnect with my independence and confidence. That sense of liberation is something I never take for granted.
What lessons have you learned about life by travelling solo?
One important lesson I’ve learned from solo travelling is how empowering it is to rely on yourself. Navigating unfamiliar places alone teaches you to trust your instincts, solve problems independently, and embrace the unexpected with confidence. It’s shown me that I’m more capable and adaptable than I ever gave myself credit for. Did you know that solo travel has been linked to increased creativity and problem-solving skills due to the new environments and challenges it presents?
Is there a destination you keep returning to, and why?
Yes, London – it’s a city that truly feels like a second home. I’ve always loved the warmth and humour of English people. Their accent is a bonus and even reminds me of being back in Australia. While the weather isn’t always ideal, the opportunities there far outweigh that. London has opened so many doors for me professionally, especially in the industry I work in, which is incredibly lucrative and fast-paced there. While other destinations may offer rich history with castles and museums, there’s just something about the energy and potential in London that keeps calling me back. I can never pass up a chance to return.
Did you make friends that you met while travelling solo that remain in your life?
Yes, I’ve made lifelong friendships through solo travel that have become incredibly valuable – personally and practically. These connections have opened doors for me to explore nearly half of the world’s countries, often with the added benefit of staying with local friends. Staying with a local not only makes travel more accessible, but it also enriches the entire experience, allowing me to gain authentic insight into the culture, traditions, and daily life of each destination. I’ve been able to try local delicacies, avoid tourist traps, and enjoy a far deeper, more meaningful connection with the places I visit.
Who inspires you?
Cardi B inspires me because she’s the definition of unapologetic authenticity and unstoppable hustle. She came from humble beginnings and turned her raw talent, bold personality, and fearless attitude into a global empire. I admire how she stays true to herself no matter what, breaks barriers for women in entertainment, and uses her platform to speak up on real issues. Her journey reminds me that with confidence, hard work, and staying real, you can turn any dream into reality.
What is on your ‘Bucket List’?
On my bucket list, which is quite extensive, is to visit every country in Europe. I want to spend enough time in each country so I can visit at least 2–3 cities/towns in each, which will be a huge job to tick off the list but will make me so happy (probably a little homesick too) and take a lengthy amount of time.
What is the single greatest life lesson you learned from travelling solo?
The greatest life lesson I’ve learned from travelling solo is that I am capable of so much more than I ever imagined. Being on my own in unfamiliar places taught me confidence, resilience, and the joy of trusting myself. It showed me that the world is full of kindness, adventure, and endless opportunities – and that true growth begins the moment you step outside your comfort zone.
What causes are you passionate about, and why?
I’m passionate about self-empowerment, travel, and entrepreneurship. I believe in creating a life of freedom and purpose, which is why I advocate for body confidence, financial independence, and the ability to build your own brand especially in industries that are often misunderstood, such as my own. Travel fuels my creativity and connects me with different cultures, while business gives me the tools to turn my passions into a global platform. I’m driven to inspire others to take control of their lives, chase opportunities, and build success on their own terms.

What are your top 3 tips for success?
Showing up. This is my very first rule of thumb. As long as you show up, it doesn't matter how little or how much you do. You ‘showing up’ follows into my next tip which is being consistent.
Consistency. Let’s take an example such as Instagram posting. If you commit to trying to grow an Instagram, you need to be posting regularly to your followers to gain new followers and to keep the algorithm happy. You need to stay consistent with posting – making sure there is content being made and ready to post otherwise, if you are missing out on days and not posting, you aren't staying consistent and therefore you may not be able to achieve the success you were hoping for.
Perseverance. In the last five years I have had many things go belly up, and when they do it feels like the whole world is basically ending. Making sure you stick to your goals, and persevering is single handedly the best way to reach your goal, which ultimately is to be successful in your field.
