Finding meaning in ritual

By Emily Clarke

Briefly …

Travelling often encourages us to step outside our routines, but it can also leave little space to process our experiences. New wellbeing experiences at Vietnam’s TIA Wellness Resort draw on the enduring role of ritual, using shared moments of reflection to encourage connection, intention and personal renewal.

Travelling is often measured in places visited, photographs taken and itineraries completed. Yet throughout history, rituals have offered something different: a way of marking moments of transition, creating space for reflection, and helping people make sense of change. Whether cultural, spiritual or simply personal, rituals invite us to pause rather than constantly move forward.

That idea has inspired a new series of social wellbeing experiences at TIA Wellness Resort in Da Nang, Vietnam. Designed to complement the resort's established wellness programmes, the experiences encourage guests to come together through simple acts of reflection rather than traditional group activities. The approach reflects growing recognition that wellbeing extends beyond physical and mental health to include social connections. In 2025, the World Health Organization's Commission on Social Connection highlighted the significant impact that loneliness and social isolation have on health, calling for social wellbeing to receive the same level of attention as other aspects of health.

“Our social wellness activities provide a container for people to gather, reflect and release,” TIA Wellness Resort general manager Ramon Imper tells us. “The experiences may be rooted in inner reflection, but going through the process with others and under the guidance of a facilitator provides a higher level of support and a feeling of community.”

One of the new experiences, the Release and Renewal Fire Ceremony, invites guests to reflect on thoughts, emotions or habits they are ready to leave behind. Participants write these down before placing the paper into a fire as a symbolic act of release. They then write a second note describing an intention they hope to carry forward before it too is offered to the flames. “The fire serves as a visual and energetic focal point, supporting a sense of closure, clarity and forward movement,” says Ramon. “This shared yet deeply personal experience fosters emotional release, intention setting and a renewed sense of lightness.”

A second experience, Sound and Stillness – A Collective Resonance Ritual, takes place in the resort’s tropical wellness gardens. Guests begin with quiet reflection before selecting an intention and expressing it through simple instruments, singing bowls and wind chimes. Rather than following a structured performance, each participant contributes to an evolving soundscape that unfolds naturally around the group. The emphasis is not on musical ability, but on creating an environment where participants can slow down, become present and experience shared moments of reflection.

Perhaps the most enduring of the new experiences is Letters to Your Future Self. During the session, guests write a personal letter reflecting on how they feel, what they have learned during their stay and what they hope to carry into the future. The letters are collected before guests depart and mailed to them later, offering an opportunity to revisit their intentions and the perspectives they discovered while away from everyday life.

For solo travellers in particular, rituals such as these offer more than another scheduled activity. Rituals remind us that travel is not only about changing places, but also about recognising the moments that change us.
