Women over 50 are setting the pace for solo journeys
By Emily Clarke
Briefly …
A recent JourneyWoman survey shows women over 50 are embracing solo travel with confidence, keeping budgets steady, and placing Canada and the Arctic at the top of their 2025 travel lists.
For those of us who travel solo, the stories of others can often inspire our own journeys. Few are more inspiring than the women over 50 who continue to push boundaries, travelling with an unrivalled combination of confidence, curiosity and resilience. Their choices remind us that solo travel is not about age but about attitude – about seeking new places, new connections and new ways of experiencing and being in the world.
Solo travel isn’t slowing down for women over 50 – it’s gathering momentum. The latest JourneyWoman survey of more than 660 women shows this group is planning with purpose in 2025, booking international trips, favouring destinations as bold as the Arctic, and aligning their choices with personal values as much as budgets.
Conducted from 28 July to 4 August 2025 with 662 responses, respondents were female travellers over 50 largely from North America, including Canadians (38%), Americans (54%), with the remaining 8% from several other countries. Approximately 40% of respondents are women ages 65–75, 21% of respondents are 75+, with the remainder (39%) under age 65.

Canada leads the way, chosen by 43% of respondents as their top destination – with its wide-open spaces, cultural depth, and reputation for safety have secured it first place. The Arctic has also leapt into the top five, particularly among American travellers, moving from ‘niche’ to ‘bucket list’. Western Europe, the United Kingdom, and Mexico remain favourites, while Canadians are increasingly looking to South America thanks to favourable exchange rates.

Two-thirds of women surveyed have already booked international travel this year, up from 64% earlier in 2025. Most are planning to travel within nine months, showing that while travel is carefully considered, it isn’t being put off – either in the short-term or indefinitely.
Budgets remain steady, with women over 50 spending an average of USD$6,659 (AUD$10,017) a year on travel, excluding flights and insurance. Women in the 65–74 age segment spend the most at USD$6987 (AUD$10,500) per year, second only to millennial spending, and far above Gen Z spending on travel. In spite of the fact that 60% of respondents reported solo travel as their preferred travel style, either independently or in a group, the biggest frustration continues to be the single supplement surcharge, cited by 78% as the greatest barrier to travelling solo.
Beyond money and destinations, values are increasingly guiding choices, with more than half of respondents saying that the country of origin of a travel company matters to them. Forty-two percent prefer women-led or women-owned businesses, and almost one in three seek out companies that visibly support women’s rights, diversity, and inclusion.
Together these findings reveal a clear picture – women over 50 are experienced, purposeful travellers who are setting the pace for solo journeys. They are not winding down – they are defining how and why travel is done in what remains of 2025, and, I imagine, well into the future.
